World Cup Day Three

Never write off the Germans

Tim Cahill got a harsh red card as the Australians crashed to a 4-0 defeat to impressive Germany. The scoreline at the time was 2-0 and Australia were putting some pressure on the Germans. He
cried at the post-match press conference - describing it as the worst experience of his playing career. Even Schweinsteiger, who was the victim of the tackle, concedes, while it was foul, a straight red card was over-the-top. After the sending off, the Germans scored two more in quick succession - best win of the tournament so far.

Africans "handed" win

Ghana became the first African nation to win a match at this World Cup, beating 10-man Serbia, thanks to a totally unnecessary handball by Serbian defender Zdravko Kuzmanovic, which was brilliantly spotted by the referee. Asamoah Gyan slotted home the penalty with just five minutes to go, and came close to adding a second in injury time when he hit the post. It makes this group very interesting. Serbia would have fancied their chances of getting out of the group - but not so sure now!

Uh-Oh

Another goalkeeping gaffe! Slovenia are gifted a 1-0 win over 10-man Algeria in the day's first kick-off. A game, by all accounts, that was not worth getting up at 07.30am (ET) to see! It was settled 11 minutes from the end, when a Robert Koren shot bounced oddly in front of keeper Fawzi Chaouchi who failed to collect it.
